Liège Airport is set to transform the landscape of air cargo with the launch of CargoLand – a groundbreaking €500 million infrastructure project that revolutionize air cargo handling through unparalleled scale, technology, and sustainability. Scheduled for full completion by 2040, CargoLand is meticulously designed to position LGG among Europe’s top three cargo airports. Already ranked as the fifth largest cargo hub in Europe, LGG boasts 24/7 operations, a dedicated cargo community, and a strong reputation for speed, innovation, and a cargo-first mindset. These advantages will be significantly amplified with the development of CargoLand.
At the heart of the project lies LGG Connect, a newly formed community designed to unify airport stakeholders – airlines, handlers, forwarders, logistics providers, public entities, and LGG itself – under the shared mission of “Support, Share, Grow.” The vision is to foster cooperation and drive continuous infrastructure development that enhances LGG’s role as an international reference point in air cargo.
“Every detail within the supply chain has been considered to ensure CargoLand delivers the ultimate in infrastructure and digital solutions,” says Frédéric Brun, Head of Commercial Cargo & Logistics at LGG. “We’re adding magic to cargo handling with CargoLand, and are confident it will exceed expectations. With 75% of European GDP centers within a one-day truck drive and increasing multimodal connections via rail, road, and sea, our geographic advantage will be fully optimized.”
CargoLand will feature 90 hectares dedicated to logistics development, attracting global logistics giants, while 24 hectares are earmarked for office space. A 38,000 m² first-line warehouse is being constructed to support long-term growth, complemented by a 120,000 m² e-commerce warehouse and 180,000 m² landside warehouse to enable efficient last-mile delivery and second-line handling. Plans also include 15 new parking stands for ground support equipment (GSE) and a dedicated MRO hangar to expedite aircraft checks and services.
“CargoLand is the place to be for cargo handling,” emphasizes Torsten Wefers, Vice President Sales & Marketing at LGG. “Our vision is for CargoLand to be the first choice when shipping freight in and out of Europe. Whether it’s MRO, e-commerce, pharma, perishables, or express cargo, CargoLand will offer commodity-specific, tech-driven handling solutions – from advanced digital shipment tracking to real-time cargo movement management. With its customer-focused and sustainable infrastructure, CargoLand is poised to leave a lasting mark on Europe’s logistics landscape.”
