EU logistics center for humanitarian aid at Leipzig / Halle Airport

The EU and the Member States are setting up logistics centers in order to be able to meet the growing needs of the health sector even in crisis situations. In addition to the procurement, storage and maintenance of protective equipment, the logistical distribution is also organized via the logistics centers.

Götz Ahmelmann, CEO Mitteldeutsche Flughafen AG: “The decision to set up the EU logistics center at our airport is logical. It rewards our commitment to optimal conditions at the Leipzig / Halle air freight hub. We are proud to make our contribution to humanitarian aid and feel encouraged to continue doing everything we can to ensure that we are flexible in getting all types of cargo into the air. "

Leipzig / Halle Airport, Europe's fifth largest cargo airport, offers the best conditions for handling humanitarian aid shipments. The airport has a 24-hour operating permit for cargo flights and is directly connected to the trans-European motorway and rail network. With over 1,000 weekly take-offs and landings in freight traffic, the airport has proven itself in the midst of the Corona crisis as a guarantor of reliable logistics and supply chains for the population and industry.

All types of air freight and cargo aircraft can be handled at the airport. In addition, the location has CEIV Pharma certification and is able to handle temperature and time-sensitive pharmaceutical shipments such as vaccines around the clock.

In the past, humanitarian aid flights have repeatedly started from the Central German airport. In the last few months, aid supplies from the DRK to Greece and Honduras have been flown out via Leipzig / Halle, including urgently needed tents and water treatment systems for flood areas.
