Airbus A350F Freighter Valuation Approaches US$200 Million

The Airbus A350F freighter is projected to achieve a market value of US$197 million to US$198 million upon delivery in 2027, with monthly lease rates expected to reach US$1.53 million to US$1.55 million, according to aviation consultancy IBA. The forecast highlights the anticipated market positioning of Airbus’ next-generation freighter as airlines, cargo operators and lessors evaluate fleet renewal opportunities and the long-term economics of widebody cargo aircraft. The projected valuation places the A350F above the Boeing 777F, which is estimated to be worth approximately US$170 million for a new aircraft delivered in 2026, with monthly lease rates of around US$1.35 million.

The A350F programme reached a significant milestone with the aircraft’s maiden flight on September 29, 2026. Airbus is targeting entry into service in the second half of 2027, subject to the successful completion of its flight-test programme and certification requirements. The aircraft represents Airbus’ effort to establish a stronger presence in the large-capacity freighter segment, traditionally dominated by Boeing. According to IBA data cited in the report, Airbus has secured 115 firm orders for the A350F from 14 disclosed customers, compared with 89 firm orders for Boeing’s forthcoming 777-8F from nine disclosed customers. The orderbook indicates growing interest in next-generation freighters as operators consider the replacement of older aircraft and the modernisation of their cargo fleets.

Designed for long-haul cargo operations, the A350F will offer a maximum payload capacity of approximately 111 tonnes, compared with around 103 tonnes for the Boeing 777F. Its large main-deck cargo door, measuring 14 ft 1 in, is designed to accommodate oversized and specialised freight, providing flexibility for operators serving diverse cargo markets. The aircraft also benefits from commonality with the Airbus A350-900 and A350-1000 passenger aircraft, which could offer operational advantages to airlines already operating the A350 family through shared crew qualifications, maintenance practices and parts inventory. These features are expected to be important considerations for operators evaluating the aircraft’s overall efficiency and integration into existing fleets.

The anticipated introduction of the A350F comes as the air cargo industry continues to assess capacity requirements amid changing global trade patterns, e-commerce demand, high-tech shipments and the movement of specialised and time-sensitive goods. The retirement of ageing freighters, including Boeing 747-400F aircraft, could create additional replacement opportunities for newer-generation widebody freighters. However, operators will continue to weigh aircraft acquisition and leasing costs against payload capability, fuel consumption, maintenance requirements, network flexibility and revenue potential. IBA’s projected valuation and lease rates suggest a premium market position for the A350F, although actual values will depend on market conditions, aircraft availability, financing costs and individual lease agreements.

With its maiden flight completed, a substantial orderbook and anticipated entry into service in 2027, the Airbus A350F is emerging as a significant contender in the next generation of widebody freighters. Its ability to attract further customers and compete with established and forthcoming Boeing freighter models will depend on the successful delivery of the programme, demonstrated operating economics and the evolving requirements of global cargo operators. As the aircraft moves closer to commercial introduction, its valuation and projected lease rates will remain important indicators for airlines, lessors and investors assessing the future of the large-freighter market.
