777 Freighter Fleet Surpasses 747 as Leading Twin-Engine Freighter

Boeing’s 777 Freighter fleet has overtaken the in-service fleet of 747 freighters to become the world’s most widely operated widebody freighter, marking a significant shift in the global air cargo industry.

Since its first delivery in 2009, more than 330 777 Freighters have entered service. The fleet now accounts for approximately 40% of global freighter capacity and carries more air cargo annually than any other freighter type. According to Boeing, the value of global trade transported by the 777F fleet was estimated at around US$4 trillion last year.

The aircraft has become a key part of global logistics, transporting a wide range of goods, including electronics, fresh produce, pharmaceuticals, aircraft engines and other specialised cargo.

Meanwhile, Boeing is advancing development of the next-generation 777-8 Freighter. Part of the 777X family, the aircraft will feature a new carbon-fibre composite wing and purpose-built engines. Boeing says the 777-8F will offer a payload capacity of 118 tonnes and 30% lower fuel consumption than previous-generation aircraft.

The 777-8 Freighter has secured 89 firm orders from airlines and cargo operators worldwide, including Cargolux, China Airlines, Ethiopian Airlines, Lufthansa, Qatar Airways and Silk Way West Airlines.
